Can I Use NDIS for The Sweet Potato Kitchen? A Straight-Up Guide
The Sweet Potato Kitchen is not a registered NDIS provider, but that does not rule out NDIS funding. If you are plan-managed or self-managed, you can usually still put our meals through your plan under Core Supports, specifically Assistance with Daily Life. If your plan is agency-managed (NDIA-managed), you will need a registered provider instead. The rest of this guide walks through exactly how each option works.
What's the difference between a registered and a non-registered NDIS provider?
A registered NDIS provider has gone through the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission's registration process. A non-registered provider, like The Sweet Potato Kitchen, has not, but that does not mean participants can't use us. It just changes which type of plan management can pay for it.
Which NDIS funding types can use a non-registered provider?
This comes down to how your plan is managed, not what you're buying. Here's the breakdown:
| Plan management type | Can you use a non-registered provider? | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| NDIA-managed (agency-managed) | No | Registered providers only. |
| Plan-managed | Yes | We invoice you, you send the itemised receipt to your plan manager, they claim the eligible portion from your Core Supports budget. |
| Self-managed | Yes | You pay upfront, then claim the eligible portion yourself using your itemised receipt, usually through the myplace portal. |
Most participants use a mix, some supports agency-managed, others plan- or self-managed. Check with your plan manager or support coordinator which category your meal budget sits in before you order.
How do I actually claim The Sweet Potato Kitchen on my NDIS plan?
There is no special NDIS checkout, you simply order as normal and use the receipt afterwards.
- Order your meals as usual from our menu.
- Ask us for a detailed receipt, itemising each meal, at hello@thesweetpotatokitchen.com.au. We're used to this request and happy to help.
- Send it to your plan manager (if plan-managed) or submit it yourself through the NDIS myplace portal (if self-managed).
- Not sure it will be approved? Ask us to send a sample receipt first, so you or your plan manager can check it against your plan before you commit to a full order.

Which NDIS budget category do meals come under?
Ready-made meals typically sit under Core Supports, Assistance with Daily Life. This is the same category that covers help with everyday tasks like cooking and household jobs, which is why meal delivery is a reasonable and common claim for many participants managing fatigue, mobility issues, or a disability that makes cooking difficult.
Is meal delivery "reasonable and necessary" under the NDIS?
Every NDIS claim, no matter the provider, has to meet the scheme's "reasonable and necessary" test: it has to relate to your disability, help you achieve a goal in your plan, and represent value for money compared to other ways of meeting that need. For many participants managing fatigue, chronic pain, reduced mobility, or a disability that makes standing and cooking difficult, ready-made meals clear that bar easily, it's a practical, everyday support, not a luxury. If cooking safely and consistently is genuinely hard for you, it's worth raising meal support explicitly at your next plan review so it's reflected in your stated goals.
Will my plan manager definitely approve it?
We can't promise that, and we'd rather be upfront than oversell it. Approval depends on your individual plan, your goals, and your plan manager's read of what's reasonable and necessary. What we can do is make the admin side easy: a clear, itemised receipt, sent promptly, so your plan manager has everything they need to make the call.
Grass-fed organic beef, layered and slow-baked, gluten friendly and dairy free, serves two. A cosy midweek main that reheats in minutes.
What if I'm not sure which category I fall under?
Your support coordinator or plan manager is the best first call, they can see your plan and tell you exactly what your Core Supports budget allows. If you'd like to bring us into that conversation, email hello@thesweetpotatokitchen.com.au and we'll send over a sample invoice to make it a five-minute check rather than a guessing game.

Frequently asked questions
Is The Sweet Potato Kitchen a registered NDIS provider?
No. We're a non-registered provider, which means plan-managed and self-managed participants can generally still claim us, while NDIA-managed (agency-managed) participants cannot.
What's the difference between plan-managed and self-managed?
Plan-managed means a plan manager handles your claims for you, you send them the receipt and they do the rest. Self-managed means you pay upfront and claim the eligible amount back yourself, usually through the myplace portal.
Do I need a special invoice for NDIS claims?
Just an itemised one. Email us at hello@thesweetpotatokitchen.com.au and we'll send a detailed receipt breaking down exactly what you ordered.
Can I claim delivery fees as well as the meals?
That depends on your specific plan and your plan manager's interpretation. Send them the full itemised receipt (which includes delivery) and let them confirm what's eligible.
What if my claim gets knocked back?
Talk to your plan manager or support coordinator about why, and whether a different budget line or goal wording in your plan review might cover it next time. We're always happy to resend documentation if that helps the conversation.
