7 Benefits of Bone Broth (and Why We Call Ours Liquid Gold)

The Sweet Potato Kitchen

Bone broth's benefits come down to a few honest things: it's simmered for hours from real bones, so it carries collagen, amino acids and minerals through into the liquid; it's warm and gentle when a full meal feels like too much; and it's a genuinely comforting way to look after yourself on a cold week. What it isn't is a cure for anything. We're not going to tell you a cup a day will instantly fix your gut or your joints, because the science on that is still catching up to the hype. Here's what bone broth actually offers, benefit by benefit.

1. It's warming, gentle food for when a big meal feels like too much

There's a reason bone broth shows up whenever someone's run down, recovering, or just cold. It's warm, savoury and easy to sip slowly, which makes it the kind of food you can manage even when your appetite isn't fully there. Melbourne winters have a way of making this exact craving show up on repeat.

Our Organic Chicken Bone Broth is simmered for hours from a treasured family recipe, then poured straight into freezer to microwave containers so it's ready whenever that craving hits, no simmering required on your end.

2. It's made from real bones, simmered low and slow, so nothing goes to waste

Good bone broth is essentially whole-animal cooking: the bones, connective tissue and marrow that would otherwise be thrown out get simmered for hours until their flavour and nutrients move into the liquid. That's a very old, very practical way of cooking, long before it had a wellness label attached to it.

We make ours with organic chicken from named local suppliers, the same sourcing standard behind everything else in our kitchen, so what you're getting is closer to what your grandmother would have simmered on the stove than a supplement.

3. It's a natural source of collagen and amino acids like glycine and proline

This is the part that's actually measurable. Simmering bones and connective tissue for a long time breaks down collagen into gelatin, releasing amino acids including glycine, proline and glutamine into the broth. These are the building blocks of connective tissue, skin and gut lining in your own body, and they're part of why bone broth has a naturally rich, slightly silky mouthfeel when it's done properly.

What we won't do is promise you immediately visibly firmer skin or fewer wrinkles from a bowl of broth. Some collagen research is promising, but a lot of it is still early or funded by supplement companies, so we'd rather you know that upfront than oversell it.

4. Many people find it gentle on digestion

Warm liquids in general tend to sit more easily than a heavy meal, and broth's low-fibre, mostly-liquid nature makes it a common choice when someone wants something nourishing without much digestive effort, after a big week, a bug going around, or just a day where cooking (or eating much at all) feels like a lot.

5. It's a simple way to add protein and minerals to your day

A 500ml serve of our bone broth carries a genuine hit of protein alongside minerals like calcium, magnesium and phosphorus drawn out during the long simmer. It's not a replacement for a full meal, but as a between-meals sip, a base for a quick soup, or a savoury alternative to another coffee, it's an easy way to add something more substantial to your day without any effort on your part.

6. The honest bit: what the research actually says about gut, joint and immune health

This is where a lot of bone broth content overreaches, so we want to be straight with you. Here's roughly where the evidence actually sits:

Claim you'll see online What's actually known
"Bone broth heals your gut lining" Amino acids like glutamine are involved in gut lining maintenance, but there isn't strong human evidence that drinking broth reverses gut issues. Treat it as a gentle, comforting food, not a fix.
"It fixes joint pain" Broth contains small amounts of compounds related to glucosamine and chondroitin, but at much lower doses than supplements studied for joint health. Any effect is likely modest at best.
"It boosts your immune system" Warm, nourishing food and good hydration genuinely help you feel better when you're run down. That's a real and simple benefit, without needing to claim broth is "immune boosting" on its own.
"It's basically medicine" It's a nourishing, comforting whole food. That's genuinely enough of a reason to have it in your freezer.

We say "food is medicine" as a personal philosophy at The Sweet Potato Kitchen, the idea that eating well and being cared for matters. It's not a medical claim, and we're not doctors. If you're managing a specific health condition, that's a conversation for your GP or dietitian, not a blog post.

That's the science, presented as honestly as we can. Here's my own experience, for what it's worth: adding bone broth regularly was part of my own gut healing journey, and over time I found I could tolerate foods that used to leave me really uncomfortable. I'm not a doctor, and I won't tell you it will do the same for you, because everybody's gut is different and there's no single food that fixes everyone's gut in the same way. But it was a genuine part of my own story, and it's a big reason bone broth means something to me personally, not just as a product on our menu. Take it as one person's experience alongside the research above, not as a promise.

7. It's freezer-ready, so it's actually there when you need it

The single biggest reason most people never get the benefits above is that homemade bone broth takes the better part of a day and a stockpot you have to babysit. Ours is already simmered, portioned and frozen, so it's in your freezer for the night you're too tired to cook, not a weekend project you keep meaning to get to.

A lot of our customers keep a running stash of soups and broths on hand for exactly this reason, grabbing whatever's closest on a cold or chaotic night rather than reaching for takeaway.

Frequently asked questions

Is bone broth the same as stock?

They're closely related. Stock is typically simmered for a shorter time, while bone broth is simmered much longer, often 8 or more hours, to draw more collagen and minerals out of the bones. That longer simmer is what gives bone broth its richer body and higher gelatin content.

Is bone broth actually good for your gut?

It's a gentle, easy-to-sit-with food that many people reach for when their digestion feels off, and it contains amino acids that play a role in gut lining health. But there isn't strong evidence it treats or heals a gut condition on its own, so we'd rather you see it as comforting support, not a cure.

How often should you drink bone broth?

There's no set rule. Plenty of people have a cup a few times a week as a warming snack or a base for cooking, others reach for it mainly when they're feeling run down. Treat it the same way you'd treat any other nourishing food: as often as it's useful to you.

Is The Sweet Potato Kitchen's bone broth gluten and dairy free?

Yes, it's made intentionally without gluten, dairy or refined sugar, like everything we make. We do cook in a shared kitchen, so we can't claim it's certified safe for coeliac disease, and every ingredient is listed on the product page so you can check for yourself.

How long does it keep in the freezer, and once it's thawed?

It keeps up to 6 months frozen. Once thawed, use it within 3 days.

Why do you call it "liquid gold"?

Partly because of the colour once it's properly set with gelatin, and partly because it's the kind of thing you're genuinely glad to have on hand on a cold night. No medicinal claim intended, just a name that stuck.
