Gluten Free Christmas Hampers: What to Send Someone Who Can't Eat Gluten or Dairy

The Sweet Potato Kitchen
A gluten free Christmas hamper should be something they'll actually eat. Here's how to get it right.

A good gluten free Christmas hamper is one the recipient can eat every single item of, without reading a label twice or quietly setting half of it aside. That sounds obvious, and it's exactly where most hampers fall down. If you're shopping for someone who can't eat gluten or dairy, this guide covers what to look for, what to avoid, and what tends to land better than a standard hamper.

What makes a good gluten free Christmas hamper?

Three things, in order of how much they matter:

  1. Every item works for them. A hamper where three of eight things are off limits isn't a gift, it's a sorting exercise.
  2. It's clearly labelled. They shouldn't have to email you to ask what's in it.
  3. It's food they'd choose. Free-from food has a reputation for being worthy rather than good. The gift lands when it's the nice version.

Why most gluten free hampers miss the mark

Open a typical gluten free hamper and you'll find crackers, a dip, some nuts, dried fruit and chocolate. It's fine. It's also the fourth one they've received this month, and if they're dairy free as well as gluten free, the chocolate and the dip are usually out.

The bigger issue is that a hamper is a box of snacks. The person you're buying for has almost certainly spent the year doing more cooking than everyone around them, because eating out is harder and convenience food mostly isn't an option. A tin of biscuits doesn't touch that.

What to send instead

Here's the honest comparison, including where a classic hamper still wins.

Classic hamper A bundle of real meals
Looks impressive on arrival Yes, this is its strength Less of a moment
Actually useful in January Usually gone or forgotten Still in the freezer, still wanted
Takes work off their plate No Yes, that's the whole point
Easy to post anywhere Yes, Australia wide Frozen delivery, VIC and NSW only
Good for a small token gift Yes Better suited to a proper gift

If you need something posted to Perth, buy the hamper. If they're in Victoria or New South Wales and you want the gift to still be doing work in February, a bundle of meals is the stronger move.

How do you know it's actually safe for them?

This is where it pays to be precise, because "gluten free" gets used loosely and the stakes differ enormously from person to person.

Someone with coeliac disease needs certified gluten free products made in a dedicated facility. Someone with a sensitivity or an intolerance usually has more room to move. Those are different requirements and it's worth knowing which one you're shopping for before you buy.

On our own meals we're deliberate about the wording. Every dish we make is made intentionally without gluten, dairy or refined sugar, but our kitchen is a shared space, so we call our meals gluten friendly rather than gluten free, and we don't market them as safe for coeliac disease. A few items we stock are made elsewhere in certified gluten free facilities and are labelled as such on their product pages. Full ingredients and allergens are listed on every product.

If you're buying for someone with coeliac disease, ask them first. They will not mind the question. They will mind a gift they can't eat.

When should you order for Christmas?

Earlier than you think, for two reasons. Frozen delivery runs on set days, and December is the busiest month of the year for every courier in the country.

We deliver frozen across Victoria and New South Wales. Melbourne and Sydney metro delivery is $19, regional VIC and NSW is $25, and delivery is free on orders over $199. NSW orders placed by 2pm Monday arrive Thursday. Meals keep up to six months in the freezer, so ordering well ahead costs you nothing.

Free click and collect is available from our Alphington kitchen on Mondays, 10am to 4:30pm.

Frequently asked questions

What do you put in a gluten free Christmas hamper?

Things the recipient can eat all of: chocolate and treats made without gluten, a tea or chai blend, snacks with a clear allergen list, and ideally something substantial like a meal or two rather than only snacks. Check every label rather than assuming.

Is a gluten free hamper safe for someone with coeliac disease?

Only if every item is certified gluten free and made in a dedicated facility. "Made without gluten" and "certified gluten free" are not the same claim. If they're coeliac, check the certification on each product or ask them what they trust.

What's a good gluten and dairy free gift under $50?

A dessert or treat bundle made without both, a chai or tea blend, or artisan chocolate made without dairy. Our Sweet Treat Bundle is $38.90 and is made without gluten, dairy or refined sugar.

Can you deliver a Christmas food gift anywhere in Australia?

We deliver frozen to Victoria and New South Wales only. If your recipient is interstate, a gift card works, or a shelf-stable hamper from a company that ships nationally will suit better.

How far ahead can I order?

Meals keep up to six months frozen, so you can order well in advance. Ordering early is the safer option in December, when courier networks are at their busiest.
